Gračnica Valley

The Gračnica Valley with its tributaries is extremely rich in flora and fauna. The majority of species from this area is included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This area is distinguished by various endangered and rare plants (auricula, Daphne alpina, etc.) and animals, especially birds (kingfisher, white-throated dipper, etc.).

In the 12th century, the secluded Gračnica valley was inhabited by the Carthusian monks. The valley reveals a story of the mysterious lives of the Carthusian monks, mystical corridors, library and the love between Frederick II, Count of Cilli, and Veronika of Desenice, which ended tragically. However, it is believed that Veronika of Desenice is buried in the monastery. The Church of St. Maurice with its characteristic architectural features and part of the wall have preserved until the present day.
