In 1170, the lonely Gračnica valley was occupied by the Carthusian monks. They founded a monastery which is one of the oldest Central European Carthusian monasteries. Some remains of the former monastery still survive today: the Church of St. Maurice, part of the wall and a defensive tower. The church features a remarkable octangular stone bell tower.
The Jurklošter Carthusian monastery invites you to find out more about the mysterious lives of the Carthusian monks and the undying love between Frederick II, Count of Cilli, and Veronika of Desenice.
Guided tours are conducted for groups with advance booking or from May to October on Sundays and holidays from 14:00 to 17:00.
