Laško in the Celje County
Rich history and the mysteries of Counts of Celje
Celje region comprises of 21 municipalities that stretch from Savinja valley to Kozjansko hills. Historically, the area was connected to the Counts of Celje, Slovenia’s most powerful dynasty. Laško castle, situated close to their Celje residence, was one of their hunting posts. The nearby Gračnica valley and Jurklošter Carthusian monastery hide the secrets of a love story between Frederick II. of Celje and Veronica of Desenice.
These stories give historic charm to an area that was first populated by the Celts and Romans. During the Migration Period the settlers included Slavs and Vlachs, which might contribute to the origin of Laško’s name. Laško medieval square originates from the 11th century and was part of an extensive manor that was also the centre of Slovenia’s oldest parish.
Laško which developed during the middle ages gained momentum with the arrival of the railway. Besides craftsmanship, production and well established mining it developed strong spa and brewing industries. In 1927 its town status was proclaimed by king Alexander I. coinciding with the 700th anniversary of its first historic mention.
Three Lilies and Laško’s Coat of Arms
Laško’s coat of arms, three silver or white lilies on blue background, was acquired in the 16th century with a privilege decree. Its interesting design’s origin and meaning are unknown. At that time Laško manor was owned by the Vetter von de Lilie family who shared the same coat of arms which was most likely adopted from the town itself alongside their family name.
The three lilies also feature on the Bourbon coat of arms, a French dynasty that could not be linked to Laško in any way. Lilies, however, are a medieval symbol for purity and virginity, a sign of a monarch’s nobleness as well as God’s mother Mary, who is the subject of numerous medieval statues in Laško’s old town centre. It is also plausible that Laško’s coat of arms links to the parish’s guardian, St. Martin, or exists as an adaptation of the Counts of Celje coat of arms that features three stars on blue background.
