Laško
Let’s take a look at the Laško that Alma loved so much from its bridges. Let’s take a walk to St Christopher’s Church or climb Hum, a favourite walking destination for Alma. Let’s learn about the plants she used to sketch on her hikes at the botanical signpost.
Hotel Špica

“My favourite paths lead to Laško,” wrote Alma Karlin in her travel diary. She often walked from Celje to Laško, sometimes taking the train. Her favourite and the most regular stop on her hikes in the surrounding hills was the Hotel Henke, today’s Hotel Špica, next to the railway station. In his diaries, she often mentions goulash at Henke’s and a mug of beer.
Hint: Treat yourself to goulash at Špica.
Hum and Its Botanical Splendour
On her hikes in the hills, Alma Karlin observed, admired and sketched flowers. The first order of business in Laško was to find Helleborus on Hum”, she wrote in his diary. In addition to the flower, also named the Winter or Christmas Rose, the rest of Hum’s botanical splendour also fascinated her.
Hint: Marked hiking trails lead to the lookout point on Hum, which now also features a wind organ. If not to the very top, at least hike past Tabor Castle to the botanical signpost on the path leading to Hum.

The Tourist Information Centre with a souvenir shop is located in the building where the first mug of the Laško beer, much loved by Alma, was brewed. If she came to Laško by train, Alma must have also crossed the bridge over the Savinja River and Valvasor Square to get to Hum.

ALMA’S TRAILS AROUND LAŠKO
Alma Karlin took hikes along the hiking trails still popular in Laško today. One of the shortest and most popular is the Three Churches Trail, leading to St. Christoph, St. Michael and St. Catherine in Kuretno.
