Near the thermal spa centre, the Rečica stream flows into the Savinja river. The picturesque valley, surrounded by the ridges of numerous peaks, was known for the coal mining industry in the past.
Coal mining in the Laško area was first mentioned in writing as early as 1767. Intensive mining took place in the beginning of the 19th century. The coal was mined in the vicinity of the villages of Brezno, Huda jama and Šmihel. In 1992, the mine production in the Laško coal mine was shut down because of the new energy policy. In the area, there are still significant coal deposits, lying deep under the surface.
The Rečica valley is an excellent starting point for hikers and bikers. You can head to the surrounding hills of Šmohor, Mrzlica, Kal, Govško brdo and Baba. The interesting Rečica circular mountain trail runs across the valley.
